Ayurvedic expert Dr. Dimple Jangara shares home remedies to soothe indigestion.
Travelling is a great way to rejuvenate and relax, but people often eat unhealthy foods that are sour and lead to indigestion. It causes bloating, sourness, gas, and other intestinal problems, making your commute a nightmare.
In the same Instagram post, nutritionist Niti Gupta said, “There has been a significant increase in the number of people suffering from acid reflux due to overconsumption of unhealthy foods,” but rather than resorting to medications, try simple and effective home remedies.
So don’t let it ruin your travel plans. Add these foods to your carry-on. Ayurvedic and gut health practitioner Dimple and Dr. Jangata recommend this if you experience bloating or stomach cramps while travelling.
Fennel Seeds: Experts say fennel seeds have carminative properties, which aid in peristalsis (wave-like muscle contractions that move food through the digestive tract) and digestion. Other benefits they cite are: “antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, low in calories, a good source of vitamin C, and protects against cell damage caused by unstable molecules called free radicals. The seeds also contain minerals important for bone health, including “potassium, magnesium, calcium, and manganese.”
“Manganese is important for enzyme activation, metabolism, cell protection, bone growth, blood sugar control, and wound healing,” she says, roasting fennel seeds in a dry pan and adding a small bottle to her purse. “1 tablespoon after each meal. Helps prevent itching, bloating, and indigestion.”
Cardamom: The original refreshing feeling and umami of the spice make it ideal as an after-meal mouth freshener. “Because of its diuretic properties (that is, it helps urine flush water out of the body around the heart), it helps lower blood pressure and is full of compounds that fight inflammation,” he says. This helps the seeds get the thermal effect, which boosts your metabolism.
“There’s a switch after eating cardamom with sugar crystals,” he said, adding that it’s often mixed with other medicinal spices to relieve “pain, nausea, and vomiting.”
Lemons: Many people get sick while travelling. As a result, doctors recommend “drinking lemon with lukewarm water before or after meals to aid digestion.”
The citric acid in lemon juice increases gastric acid secretion (digestive juices produced in the stomach), helping the body break down and digest food.
Asafoetida: This is a spicy spice found in many Asian countries. “A pinch of it dissolves in 5 glasses of water and immediately relieves post-meal bloating,” experts advise. Other advantages are listed.
